Self-reliance!

Bonjour !

Well, exams are finally over and I am into the holiday mood!!!!

Ralph Waldo Emerson is a wonderful essayist of the transcendentalism and he is the author of the famous essay, “Self-Reliance”. I read the essay, and wanted to apply it to our day-to day life. Emerson requests the reader to obey the God which is present inside everyone of us, as only the truth inside us can guide us properly!

I thought, I could relate this to the recent elections. When compared to the previous ones, this election was well planned and organised. Kudos to the election commission! Facilities were provided to the physically challenged and to those in bad shape! There was also an increase in awareness created by the social media

But, what did people do? They needed someone else to supervise them. Like I had mentioned in my previous post,

So, where is the self-reliance here?

Nowhere!

We call ourselves “civilized” and “cultured”. But still we need people to supervise us! If only a third person or a CCTV camera can keep us under control, how can be called civilized? Just because the society is doing something, that doesn’t mean it is right!!!

Emerson calls this as “non-conformity”- not submitting to the prescribed norms of the society but following your own heart and the God inside your own self! The God inside each one of us is the self-righteousness

Self righteousness is missing here! It is the root cause for all problems!

That was why our ancestors kept telling about the supreme power which is omnipresent and omnipotent. But in the name of science we have just lost faith and that has rendered all our knowledge useless!

“Who is the God who offers people power but no moral framework to tell you how to use the power?”, says Dan Brown in his book Angels and Demons .

But science is an inevitable part of human life! In order to escape from its clutches, one ought to have self-reliance and an ability to differentiate between the good and the bad. I am emphasizing on the good and the bad as it is easy to justify the evil deeds with non-conformation!

Well, I hope we all get the “esprit critique”(ability to differentiate) and self reliance!
